On our way up to the Olympic Peninsula for our vacation we tried to stop at my childhood beach off Midway Beach road. The road is closed - flooded so you can't even get out to the beach there.
It was surreal driving through this area. Not much has changed - and yet it's all changed. It is still very economically depressed. The few restaurants that we used to go to are all boarded up. The house we lived in was bulldozed and now there is a trailer park there. But I think the most shocking part was not being able to get to _my_ beach.
We camped at the state park there, which is really quite nice. It was Salem's first night of "real" camping, and a test run for us to make sure all our equipment worked before going backpacking.
